About the lecture:

During the lecture, a chronological historical outline showing the trends in global art that influenced the poetics of Polish poster will be shown. The Polish School of Posters, a unique phenomena, will be discussed – these are the works of poster artist from the years 1955-1965, which gained acclaim in the eyes of critics around the world. Audiences will also have a chance to get to know the newest trends in Polish poster since the 1970s up to contemporary times.

A thematic classification of poster art, with an emphasis on poster advertising for cultural events such as theatre, cinema, concerts and exhibitions will also be presented.

Another issue discussed during the lecture will be the circus and zoo advertising poster. This part of the lecture will be an introduction to the theme of the workshop, during which the idea of a semantic analysis in poster will be developed, crucial in terms of analyzing images. As examples, film, opera and theatre posters, as well as depicting the animal kingdom in different contexts, will be shown.

About the author:

Maria Magda Kurpik – poster historian, art conservator. Curator of numerous poster exhibitions in Poland and abroad, member of international competition juries in the field of art. Author of exhibition catalogues, books and albums on poster art. She was awarded the Cross of Merit by the President of the Republic of Poland in 2013 for her contribution towards popularizing Polish culture and preservation of national heritage.
